Today, we are going to look at the vertical structure of your chart. Why does the 4x2 matrix have an "Upper Layer" and a "Lower Layer"?

In BaZi, the top layer is called the Heavenly Stems, and the bottom layer is called the Earthly Branches.

To understand how this works in real life, you just need to think of a tree.

The Heavenly Stems: The Leaves (What People See)

The top row of your chart represents everything that is visible to the public. It is the surface-level reality of your life.

Think of this as the leaves and canopy of a tree. When you look at a tree from a distance, you see its leaves, its fruit, and its height. You can tell if it looks healthy or withered.

In your personality, the Heavenly Stems represent:

• Your social persona and reputation.
• Your visible career achievements and public wealth.
• The surface-level events that happen to you (e.g., getting a promotion, buying a house, publicly dating someone).
• Your overt, obvious personality traits that strangers pick up on immediately.

If you have a lot of Fire on your Heavenly Stems, you might appear to the world as an incredibly outgoing, passionate, and energetic person. You are the life of the party. But is that who you really are? That depends on the roots.

The Earthly Branches: The Roots (What Actually Drives You)

The bottom row of your chart is the hidden reality. It represents the foundation that supports the visible structure above.

Think of this as the root system of a tree. The roots are buried underground. You can't see them, but they are doing 90% of the actual work—gathering nutrients, anchoring the tree during a storm, and storing energy.

In your personality, the Earthly Branches represent:

• Your true inner self, your private thoughts, and your hidden desires.
• Your deeply ingrained habits and subconscious drives.
• Your private life, behind closed doors.
• The actual physical reality of a situation (as opposed to the appearance of it).

When The Leaves Don't Match The Roots

The magic of reading a BaZi chart happens when you compare the top layer to the bottom layer. This reveals the fascinating contradictions in human behavior.

Your Zodiac is Just One Root

Remember in Part 1 when we talked about the "Zodiac Animal"?

Your Zodiac Animal (Pig, Snake, Dragon, etc.) is simply one of the Earthly Branches. Specifically, it is the root of your Year Pillar. It represents your deepest subconscious connection to your ancestry and the distant past—but it is only a single root in a massive, complex root system.
